We’re conditioned to think the world we experience is composed of sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch just relative to ourselves. But our sensory information runs much deeper than this. You may notice that the deeper you go, the more verbally elusive the descriptions of these areas get. We have inner body sensations, thoughts, and emotions. Soon you reach a vast expanse in the emotions and beyond, absolutely inexplicable by verbal language. This is where music comes in.
You would have to search far and wide to find someone on this earth who hasn’t been extraordinarily impacted by music in their life, but no one can really explain why. Schopenhauer said that music is “art in its highest form,” due to its completely abstract non-representational nature and that music was the only “copy” of that inner world of existence (which he called “the will”). Music is the language to communicate everything spoken language can’t. But this is not to say music only resonates the frequencies in the deepest depths of our awareness: this couldn’t be further from the truth. Music vibrates through every atom of your being, projected through your emotions, into your body, then back into the environment as sound.
Being a musician (especially a bass player) is like being a puppeteer. If you play one particular way, the audience will tend to have a similar collective response. You may notice distinct muscle groups firing, depending on the specific style, groove, and nuance the musicians choose to use. For example, if you play a punk rock track, the average listener will tend to move their head, upper neck, lower back muscles, and feet, versus Afro-Cuban Jazz which zaps the shoulders, abs, lower back, hips, legs, and feet. Dance is the physical embodiment of music and is why great dancers tend to be great musicians. Michael Jackson danced with his entire body, and when you hear his music, every muscle in your body just starts to twitch.
Counterintuitively, while music is innately non-allegorical in direct representation, music is an almost perfect allegory for every part of life! We can notice that problems or “wrong notes” only exist because we are treating them as problems or “wrong notes” rather than viewing them in a positive light with an open beginner’s mind. Hearing and experiencing the beauty in the wrong notes as a blessing in disguise and as an opportunity to be rid of musical rigidity (being “like water”) moves me closer and closer to my whole-hearted self. Because of this, I wake up every day excited by the infinite possibilities in music, because one can literally make anything that one can possibly dream up! Since the only limit is myself, I’ve promised myself to do everything in my power to continue growing and expanding as a musician and person. This obsession with exponential growth along with my high standards has led me to a place where I am constantly challenging myself, hungrily studying and studying; listening to every morsel of music I can consume. I breathe, eat, and dream in music. When given the opportunity, I practice 12 hours a day, balancing self-reflection with actual action. I’m guided by weekly private jazz theory/composition/piano, upright and electric bass lessons, yet at heart I am an autodidact. One of my greatest strengths is my ability to teach myself how to learn, obsessing with learning in order to teach myself, to juice 120% out of every minute of every situation. The more I learn the more my passion grows.
Following philosophers and people who research the science of learning, and listening to musicians who have succeeded by their own definition of success has enabled me to develop a highly self-aware, clear multi-dimensional image of the footsteps to follow. All this has led to a deep understanding of my flaws, allowing me to play the long game and target and pragmatically uproot problems, rather than wasting away snipping off leaves. Psychologists know that what you focus on is what you become. If you focus on your past, your future will become your past. But if you lovingly focus on all of the beauty surrounding you, you will become part of it! So I've spent my time aggressively studying, following closely in the footsteps of the musicians I want to be like, while still allowing myself to tread new snow. Focusing broadly on jazz music for the raw emotional and theoretical freedom, studying groundbreaking experimental music in search of organic “perfection” in the unapologetic personalities of the utmost extremes, I keep myself grounded in the beauty, soul, and tasteful intention found inside the simplicity of more popular genres. I slowly compile all these seemingly disparate and disconnected inspirations to eventually make a pretty constellation.
Growing up in Oakland, California, I’ve been surrounded by musical minds and instruments since before I can remember. Music was my first language and there hasn’t been a day I haven't played music since the bass first fell into my 11-year-old hands. I am on this path, becoming a professional musician not because I want to, but because I need to. Music is many things but most importantly to me is that it has become the way for me to self-actualize. Music gives me the power to instantly objectify my essence into an abstract resonant vibration, the ultimate form of sustainable non-environment-dependent happiness.

“
As soon as he took his bass in his hands, the energy in the whole room completely switched to positive and powerful music. His attitude towards every single note he played the first day I heard him play blew me away.
Since then, I have had the opportunity to make music with him and every time he plays by himself or with others, his passion and immense talent become contagious to whoever is around him.
He does not just play the bass: with his instrument he plays, sings, dances and paints beautiful pictures. Rocco is a true artist and he has been an inspiration to me and many others.

“
Rocco is an incredibly talented producer and bassist, but above all... a musician.
His appreciation and respect for not only current music, but also the centuries of tradition
gives him an incredible understanding of any genre or project he is attacking. When producing
my songs, even if we think the song is over or we have all the pieces of the puzzle connected,
Rocco will find a way to make it even more musical, to make the song sound more magical.

While Rocco is an outstanding acoustic bassist, he is a generational talent on electric bass...Berkeley High School’s
jazz education program is one of the best in the nation, and the list our many top professional alumni includes
Joshua Redman, Ambrose Akinmusire, Benny Green, Dayna Stephens, Peter Apfelbaum, Craig Handy, Steven Bernstein,
Hitomi Oba, Paul Hanson, Billy Buss, and Elena Pinderhughes, in addition to countless others. In the not very distant
future, that list will also include songwriter and bassist Rocco Rizzi.

Rocco always studied hard in pursuit of musical excellence. While he is a formidable bassist today who is proficient
on both the upright and electric bass, his musicianship blossomed in unexpected ways when he began to pursue
songwriting and producing.
I believe one of Rocco's secrets for success is his ability to contribute positively to any professional situation
he might find himself in. He has the kind of mind that is abundant with ideas, naturally curious and compassionate,
always enriching his musical environment with positive energy. There are many young musicians abundant with talent
in the world today. But there are less who bring talent, creativity and a reliable work ethic into a harmonious balance.
Rocco Rizzi is one of those rare gems capable of doing just that.
It has been a joy and a privilege to be his teacher and without hesitation I gladly give him my highest recommendations.

What I believe truly sets Rocco apart from other great musicians is how good of a listener he is. Taking inspiration from music ranging in
genre, era, and mood, he is able to incorporate elements which uniquely shape his sound and playing...
His keen observational skills allow him to quickly dissect his fellow players’ tastes and tendencies, and assimilate while tastefully adding
his own unique flares to the music. Despite being relatively new to music production, I have seen Rocco quickly master the craft. With
limited tools, he is able to create high quality, unreplicable music, showcasing ingenuity and resourcefulness.
Though Rocco prides himself in being primarily a bassist, his instrumental skills extend far beyond the four strings. When he picks up a guitar,
he is a natural, using skills that he’s developed as a bassist, which give him a unique, nimble playing style which many guitarists struggle to
imitate. On keys, he exhibits fluid playing which he has proven can function well in many styles.
...He has deep admiration for everybody he listens to and plays with, regardless of their status or acclaim. Gifted, delightful, and inspiring,
Rocco, and his unwavering dedication to music, make him someone worth keeping in close contact with, as his journey promises to be nothing
short of extraordinary.

I played with Rocco extensively during the Berklee Aspire Program and let me tell you, if there’s one
thing that he is, it’s professional. In every instance that we played together, he showed up prepared
and ready to get work done. He truly approaches every single one of his commitments with the same amount
of responsibility and prowess. Not to mention Rocco is also extremely proficient at bass in all genres
and styles of music. Being a drummer, a bassist’s ability to lock in with the rhythm section is very
important to me and Rocco certainly does not disappoint. Rocco’s ability to play the perfect role in every
situation along with the pure amount of passion and energy he brings to all scenarios makes him one of
the best bassists I’ve ever played with. From my experiences, Rocco has always been a pleasure to be
around in both musical and non-musical contexts. To this day I still wonder if there’s anything he can’t do!
